Being greeted by a laughing horse is no ordinary circumstance and appropriately this sets the scene for another fabulous exhibition highlighting the talent and imagination of the current crop of artists and photographers at CGS. Traditional themes have been given a contemporary twist and a wry sense of humour prods the eye of the art establishment. Reality drips from the frying pan the shed becomes a receptacle for art with attitude and ambition. Trees grow from the inanimate object and echo the emphasis on time and transformation. On entering the show the foyer space houses a wonderful set of framed works where bare feet and barbed wire prepare the visitor for an edgy and interesting experience. In the first room a couple of piano millipedes writhe under the watchful eye of the Caretaker; the stand out portrait by Becky Smith. Photographic pieces demonstrate a high level of technical skill with Harry Ryan's Trafalgar series a following the theme of old school colliding with new. Here in the main gallery space crisp graphic images off set fluid painterly portraits where Monty Python meets Henri Matisse. Film work and animation also investigate beautiful simplicity of the body in movement by Zoe Moody and the karaoke chaos of Rory Brown's 'Journey'. New to this year are a selection of year 11 art students who on merit have found themselves amongst the best in school. Here it seems there is an inexhaustible supply of talented new artists waiting to chance their arm; roll on next year!
